What age-group is mass advertising directed at?

You sometimes hear that mass advertising is directed to a group of people with a mentality of--let's say--a 10 year old? Is this true? If it's not, what age-group IS advertising directed at?

What age-group is mass advertising directed at?
You are right. Mass advertising is not aimed at age group but mass IQ which normally is assumed to be of seventh standard. (Meaning if you are having a message for masses it should have ease of reading as if the IQ of reader is equal to child of seventh standard)
Reply:Masses usually fall into mob mentality though there may be graduates and post graduates in it. So by senen standard I mean seventh grade level of understanding and responses. Report It

Reply:Advertising is directed at many different age brackets and often for the same product.

Example of some would be - a 4x4 pickup will be directed towards men showing rugged, strong and heavy workload.

Dish washing detergent commercials/ads generally will involve the 'housewife' figure.

Soda commercials generally target the teen audience or youth.

It depends on the product what genre and or age group is being targeted.
Reply:Most advertising is aimed at two groups -- young people in their late teens to early 20s, because they have disposable income and are usually easier to influence with flashy marketing campaigns. The other group is women in their 30s and 40s because they make most decisions on buying household items.

There's also niche marketing for products aimed at specific groups: commercials for medications and insurance are usually targeted toward older consumers, while alcohol commercials usually target men, just to give two examples.
Reply:how can mass advertising be targeted to one age group? Think about it - its MASS, meaning not limited to one small group of individuals...meaning reaching as many people as possible.

The best possible example of this is a billboard beside the busiest highway in NYC - how can this be targeted when the audience is anyone with at least one eyeball?

Its the message that is targeted, not the medium when it comes to mass advertising.
